LJC Talent Search Returns to Open Doors for Young Musicians

The Litchfield Jazz Camp Talent Search returns for its fourth year on March 6 at the Litchfield
Community Center. Since its launch, it has served as an incubator for young jazz talent, with
winners earning scholarships to attend the Litchfield Jazz Camp. The competition for jazz
musicians ages 13–17 was created to prepare students for the realities of jazz auditions and
competition in a supportive environment, but has quickly become much more.

For nearly three decades, Litchfield Jazz Camp avoided the idea of competition altogether. As
one devoted music teacher once told camp founder Vita Muir, “I don’t teach music for trophies.”
Muir agreed wholeheartedly. Over time, however, she came to see that avoiding competition
entirely could leave young, motivated players at a disadvantage. For students aspiring to
conservatories and top college music programs, auditions are mandatory, and auditions are, in
their own way, competitions.

Each performance at the competition is built as a mini-set. Every semifinalist plays one tune of
their choice, backed by an exceptional rhythm section (whose members have included
GRAMMY winners), an experience few teenagers ever get. Semifinalists perform before an
audience of about 100 family members, friends, and members of the public who come simply to
enjoy and encourage young talent.

Students leave having sharpened their jazz chops, but also having gained confidence,
experience performing alongside top-flight professionals, and what turn out to be lasting
connections with peers. In one case, a 13-year-old camper bonded with two young musicians
before the finals had even ended. The three boys went on to form a trio and gig around their
home bases of Brooklyn and Harlem, in a testament to “community,” a core goal of the Talent
Search.

Students ages 13–17 are invited to apply by January 8th. Details and registration are available
