If you are a high school senior or college freshman living in Fairfield County, enrolled, or enrolling in a music degree program at an institution of higher education, you can apply for the scholarship offered by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County, Inc.
Created to honor the memory of Myron “Micky” Golomb, a well-regarded area saxophonist, educator and habitué of the Jazz Society’s Thursday evening performance presentations, the scholarship is offered to students expressing financial need, dedicated to pursuing a career in jazz performance and/or jazz education.
They offer up to $5,000, which may be awarded to a single recipient or split among a few finalists, in the form of tuition paid directly to the educational institution.
They ask applicants to provide
- a short statement explaining why you are applying for the scholarship, including a description of your musical career goals
- a letter of recommendation from your primary music teacher
- a second letter of recommendation from a non-music teacher, mentor, clergy, etc.
- a parent’s or guardian’s short statement of need (we do not ask for FAFSA)
- a link to a 3-5 minute video audition or, if a composer, a PDF of a score
Applications may be made via https://www.goingmerry.com/ or https://scholarships360.org/. We intend to close the application process on April 15, though we might elect to extend the time depending on the number of qualified applications we receive.
The Jazz Society’s mission is to enrich the cultural life of Fairfield County by promoting the performance and appreciation of jazz music. In addition to the Micky Golomb Scholarship, we present weekly performances at our local VFW Post, featuring world-class musicians and a historically significant Steinway grand that formerly was the house piano at the Village Gate. Several times a year the performers will offer free clinics for student musicians, followed by public performances at our presentations. We have partnered with Kids Empowered by Your Support, Inc. (KEYS Music) in Bridgeport and the Westport Public Schools to bring world-class artists into the community to help establish the next generation of jazz enthusiasts and performers.
