The Litchfield Jazz Talent Search isn’t just about winning. It’s about young musicians expressing who they are through their music. Each year, young musicians from across the region come together to share their music, connect with others, and experience the joy of performing in front of a live audience. For many young musicians, it’s their first time taking part in a live competition, and we’re honored to share in that experience. Winners will receive a scholarship to Litchfield Jazz Camp 2026 at the Frederick Gunn School in Washington, CT.
One of those artists is Dontae James, who took home first place at last year’s Talent Search. For him, the experience was transformative. Dontae shared some of his thoughts in a recent conversation we had about his experience at the competition.
“Honestly, it really impacted me in such a positive way. It was a joy getting to play with that band—they were all just outstanding.”
Dontae says the competition taught him that great music comes from sincerity, not showmanship.
“Don’t worry about trying to be the best or to show off—just be yourself,” he advises. “They’ll see it. Play what’s true to you, play to the soul. Play what you want to hear. It’s about you—they want to help you!”
That spirit of openness and self-expression is what defines the Litchfield Jazz Talent Search. Every performer has the opportunity to grow their skills in live performance while playing alongside supportive jazz mentors, meeting new friends, and discovering how powerful it can be to play from the heart.
For Dontae, his Talent Search win was about more than recognition—it was about belonging. His advice to this year’s contestants? Trust your sound, share your truth, and let your music speak for you.
